The Semiotics and Linguistics Institute in the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Lugano, Switzerland, in organising an international conference on "Manipulation in the Totalitarian Ideologies of the 20th Century". The Conference, sponsored by the Centro Stefano Fanscini, will take place at the Monte Verita conference centre, Ascona, Switzerland, from September 29th to October 3rd, 2002.
Numerous studies on the Communist, Nazi or Fascist forms of totalitarian regimes and systems already exist, but very little has been accomplished from a comparative point of view, particularely through an analysis of the argumentative devices involved at any one time. We hope that the conference will fill this gap and that a comparative investigation of the ideological use of language may bring to light more about the nature, techniques and strategies of manipulation through language.

VENUE

The conference will be hosted  by the "Stefano Franscini Centre" of Monte Verità, Ascona (http://www.csf-mv.ethz.ch/). The Centre, located in the scenic environment of the hills surronding Lake Maggiore is able to offer high quality accomodation at moderate costs.
